The
California Smog Program
The Smog Check program is designed
to clean air and help California meet requirements of the Federal
Clean Air Act (BAR 90 - 1990). All California registered vehicle
owners must obtain and pass a Smog Check certificate to register their
vehicle with the State.
Smog is a serious health
hazard contributing to thousands of deaths each year in California.
Studies show that motor vehicles are responsible for more than half
the air pollution in our state. In fact, most of the vehicular
smog is caused by just 10 to 15 percent of vehicles - those with the
worst emissions problems.
Since the creation of the
original Smog Check program in the early 1980's, our understanding of
smog has evolved considerably. We understand the critical impact
of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and can now accurately measure vehicular
NOx emissions in the shop environment. Today's vehicle emissions
equipment is more sophisticated, and proper maintenance, can
substantially reduce NOx emissions in our air.
Vehicles registered in
areas of the state that have not attained federal air quality
standards ("Enhanced Program Areas") are tested using a BAR-97
Emission Inspection System. Enhanced areas usually reflect a
more densely populated community in addition geographic factor will
also impact air quality.
